Analysis of “Faith is A Fine Invention” by Emily Dickinson

Here is the poem:

“Faith” is a fine invention
When Gentlemen can see—
But Microscopes are prudent
In an Emergency.

Dickinson is absolutely fascinating.  One of the most famous poets who was discovered long after her death.  She was born in 1830.  Emily spent the majority of her life away from people simply living by herself in her family homestead.  She wrote many poems and letters, but was never published.  I find her fame is from the way she is able to hide huge ideas in very few words.  She cuts absolutely everything away from the idea, forcing the reader to spend time evaluating and contemplating her writing.  This is the art of poetry.  You use words in a creative and thoughtful way.  The difference between poetry and prose is the lack of words within poetry, but not a lack of meaning.

To evaluate this writing we must split it up.  Here we see two separate ideas.  The first being:

“Faith” is a fine invention

When Gentlemen can see-

Here we find a simple nine words.  It would be extremely easy to derive multiple interpretations out of these all of which would be quite different.  Evaluating them I come to the conclusion that Dickinson is referring to the complacency of men and their knowledge.  The earth is round, the sky is blue, and the universe being large is all very common knowledge which the majority shares.  We have faith that our predecessors who discovered this were correct in their findings and the majority feels no need to look further.

This is when Dickinson develops her idea of the world further by saying:

But Microscopes are prudent

In an Emergency.

This has of coursed happened thousands of times throughout history.  Humans belief of an idea is threatened and people quickly become terrified.  Once this happens we as a society begin evaluating everything we have learned.  Our faith that we have the right information is shattered and quickly we begin evaluating everything we have learned.  It also reinforces the idea of how an idea or fact can quickly become incorrect.

I hope you enjoyed this quick little analysis of Emily Dickinson’s poetry.  I of course would recommend you become more familiar with her work which you can do at: Poem Hunter

Since the majority of her works are nearly a hundred years old you can also find many free collections on Amazon.

The Beast In The Cave by H.P. Lovecraft (Analysis)

Being a fan of horror and researching the main figures within the horror genre I have found may instances of H.P. Lovecraft.  I decided to purchase all the fiction written by Lovecraft and began reading.  The majority are simple short stories.  Lovecraft made no large works.  The largest being considered a small novella.  Even without the length of most writers I find Lovecraft to have a very unique style.  It is important to remember that during his life Lovecraft was only published once.  He never received the fame he deserved until far after his death.  Luckily his work was uncovered and received the acclimation it deserves.

The first story of Lovecraft’s i have read was “The Beast In The Cave”.  What I find most interesting about this piece was the age of Lovecraft.  At 15 he was able to create a story which  was far more than anyone would expect from someone so young.  The descriptions were beautiful, but more importantly the content was truly original.  The setting is deep within a cave system.  It seems as though Lovecraft took a novel and simply wrote the climax down.  The horror is two fold with the first being very shortly after the story begins.  Here he puts his main character alone, lost, underground, and in pitch black.  Each of these separately can cause extreme fear within many individuals.  Writing a horror story in a cave is an extremely brilliant setting.

The next fear is in the form of danger.  We have already discussed what fears have been present from the beginning, but for many this would not be enough to inspire anxiety, but with the addition of an unknown animal the fear begins to intensify.  Even if you are not afraid of being lost within a cave, having to content with a threat which may end your life would probably at the very least inspire some distress.  The tale continues with the character grabbing large stones and very quietly and patiently waiting for the right moment to strike.  Though this part is only a few hundred words from the beginning of the story it still is a very suitable climax.  I was easily able to place myself in the position and was able to feel what it would be to have a very limited ability to protect myself.

The story continues just like the majority of horror tales.  The ending offers quite a surprise I would prefer not to spoil.  Suffice to say this very simply and very small introduction to the works of Lovecraft exemplifies his ability to create terror and an interesting tale.  I am sure after a hundred years the tales of Lovecraft can be found online for free, but if you are a fan of the horror genre then I recommend stopping by amazon or barnes and noble to pick up a copy.

Failings and Triumphs of American Education System

Before I begin I must say everything in this post will only be from my experience, knowledge, and opinion.  We have succeeded in many aspects.  One of the most important is allowing all children under the age of seventeen to go to school free.  This is not a common practice across the world.  The expenses to the society are great and so are the need to free up children for school. In America we despise those who would force their children to work.  I do believe that when the family would not suffer it would be preferable to offer education, but in cases where the absence of a child would force not only the child, but also the family to starve or lose their home then it would be necessary to have them work.  I believe this is one thing people against do not understand.  Would they give up their life to the family who would be destroyed in order to let their children to go to school.  I understand that of course the argument is not that simply, but the idea stands it is a great thing that we have systems set up which allows all children to go to school.  These of course work in parallel with other social programs such as wellfare and food stamps.

There is a major downside to this form of education.  If you not only allow, but force children into school the quality of education given will suffer.  If all are not as interested or intelligent as the rest then steps must be taken to slow the academic progress down.  The same problem exists with disobedient or disruptive children and the disabled. We have in many ways fixed many of the issues, but of course the program will continually be evaluated and improved upon.

The largest complaint I have is the mix of capital with higher education and information itself.  Though true intellects do not seek fortune from their intelligence it does cost much to run a university and allow the growth of different arts and sciences.  With this being said the price of such education and even access to books is far to high.  The internet has done a wonderful job removing the capital from information and the endless flow which comes is continually reducing the demand of learning.  With more access to information providers will be unable to charge or at the very least must reduce the price and add value.  I do believe that if this freedom continues and people become as intelligent or even more so with the free access to information.

Development of Creative Blowup

After a history of successful blogging and being a webmaster I have finally decided to throw everything I learned away and start fresh.  There were several reasons for the death of my web presences, but the factor which contributed the most to the collapse was I simply did not enjoy writing about things which were only geared to increase income.  The generation of my ambition came from a fear of losing the means to survive and having to rely on charity to make it through.  I feared for my job stability in the real world when put on administrative leave and felt there might be a chance of not being able to return to work.  With this fear I decided to find a adequate solution.  It was not realistic for me to seek out other employment since the job I had did not let me go and there was a good chance they wouldn’t, but this was not a comfortable feeling.  The chance though slim of being fired stayed with me and forced me to make a series of choices.

The leave was close to my complete destruction through drug and alcohol addiction.  Nothing to do, but sit home all day every day thinking.  I had been arrested for DUI and after a few months gained a few more and harsher charges when my brother and me fought.  Throughout the time I was learning more and more about how to generate income from home.  I taught myself HTML and CSS both considered the basics of website programming.  With this knowledge I began creating new websites.  After many attempts I decided the “Make Money Online” was a very lucrative niche to join.  After many months I was quite successful and had my websites earning quite a bit of money and receiving up to a thousand hits per day.  The income generated was around 1,000 $ monthly which to someone who simply needed another way to pay bills was enough.

Nearly all the charges were dropped on the condition I went and successfully graduated a rehabilitation program.  The program lasted for a full year.  This to me was far harder than anything I had since done.  the rehab cost me around 8,000 $ which was actually payed off very quickly with my normal pay and additional income.  With my online sites I was able to pay any debt I owed which included such things as my car and other backed up bills.

To maintain the site I was required to write at the very least one article per day for my own sites content or for marketing the site.  Without having the need for additional income when trouble with the sites which could have been remedied came I simply abandoned them and gave up on my pursuit for income.  It passed quickly and for quite a while I actually enjoyed the burden being lifted.  For a couple years I could care less giving my web presence up.  There was really no need to keep going, but my intellectual pursuit filled its place.  Also my love of gaming seemed to take up endless hours of my free time.  Not until recently have I had the urge to jump back into to web this time with a completely different frame of mind.

Rather than attempting to accumulate more wealth I decided a writing corner is what I wanted.  This place “Creative Blowup” is where I have decided to break the mold and share ideas about all of my passions rather than attempting to gain the highest amount of traffic and income available.  As of this moment I have not put any commercial products and I believe  the only ones I would should be the things which I write about.  This would only consist of books, my kindle, and the games I write about.  I want this place to be focused on writing improvement and idea processing.  These are the things which in the last few years have consumed me.  I have read countless classic novels throughout the last five hundred years.  As I have posted on this blog right now I am in the process of going back through the classical horror novels the newest being Dracula.  I will not be writing this blog for anything, but my release of ideas.  Even thought the topics will be varied I still have hope that and audience like me exists and will enjoy reading my writing.

Reading Dracula

Beginning this book I thought it would be similar to the rest of the classical fiction I have read.  Overall I have found the book to be very unique.  The literature itself resembles many other authors, but what separates this book from the others is the presentation.  I find it interesting that Stoker uses the first person, but is able to tell all sides of the story.  Very few books I have came across have successfully done this.  With Dracula it is an entangled web with the characters.  The method Stoker uses to show the story from all angles is diaries and letters rather than the usual story writing method.

When I first began Dracula I found myself going back to ensure I knew who was speaking.  The changes happened very quickly and quite often the end of a diary page would leave the reader with confusion and hanging in suspense.  It could be pages and in some cases chapters before the character speaking would finish their thought.  Once you get into the book it is difficult anyone would write in a journal the way the book was written.  The amount of descriptions made you believe your reading a novel rather than a book, but when the diary entry ended and the next started it would bring you back to diary.  I noticed sever instances where Stoker would have his characters apologize or explain why they were so thorough.  This being added helped somewhat in making it believable that a person would go into such depth for their diary.

The book itself thus far has been quite enthralling.  I believe the hidden secret is how Stoker makes Dracula into a massive tangle with everything having importance.  When you first pick the book up it will be a struggle.  He places a high importance on setting the book up with many lose ends you will have to wait to tie up.  You will be reading about things which make little to no sense at the time and feel they have no place within the story.  It is not until far past the half way point does he bring everything back together.  Placing this much mystery into a horror book may have been a more of a vice than a virtue.  The mysteries themselves were very enjoyable, but I feel placing so much emphasis on these rather than creating actual terror could possibly let me down at the end.  Thus far though the book has been worth every second placed and I highly recommend it if you enjoy the horror/mystery genre.

I am now 70% through and look forward in doing a complete review once I finish.

Removing Limitations

I realized my perception of the world differs from most since I believe and continued to believe my parents when they told me anything is possible.  This little saying seems to be lost by most after a few disappointments.  For me if I need something or want something, I have full belief that I can obtain it.  Obstacles though annoying are simply roadblocks which can either be removed or drove around.  In almost every instance in which I was unable to obtain my goal when I examined all variables which contributed to the failure it was me.  This is an extremely important if you wish to become more successful.  There are times when other people or other obstacles are in the way.  It is far more difficult to change others or the environment than changing yourself.  The rest of this post will be covering some of my achievements which have seemed to shock people and when I explain they can easily do the same thing they are extremely reluctant.

The first achievement which I had accomplished and easily my proudest moment was when I entered and stayed in recovery.  I used both drugs and alcohol through out my teens and twenties.  Many times I hurt others and myself nearly losing my life in an overdose.  Nothing seemed to cause enough pain for me to believe that these substances were doing more harm than good.  I had a belief that without these my life would be unbearable.  5/8/2009 was the date of my last drink.  It was a week after my birthday and I had bought a 1/5 of alcohol which I had not opened yet and decided to have a drink.  Within a very short period of time I drank the entire bottle.  I cant remember what the drink was, but it was much stronger than whisky or vodka.  By the end of the night I went into a blind rage and attempted to throw my brothers girlfriend out of the house.  He was at work, she called him and when he got home the physical fight broke out.  We destroyed the hose and when he went outside and got into his car to leave I shattered the driver side window with my fist.  The cops woke up and I went to jail.  When I awoke the next day this story that I told you I had absolutely no recollection of.  All I knew was I had blood from head to toe.  My entire arm was bandaged and hurt like hell.  To my knowledge I could have killed someone and was going to be in jail for the rest of my life.  This fear resounded in me and the humiliation of losing control and hurting a family member finally pushed me past the point in believing alcohol held a powerful beneficial impact on my life.  I entered rehab the next month and passed the 1 year program and have been clean ever since.

The second achievement which seems to shock others was my online business.  This I created before I quit drugs and alcohol.  I taught myself HTML and CSS.  My first website was terrible, but with time and practice I was able to create some decent looking blogs and websites.  After a couple years I had finally learned enough about web business to begin making money.  Before my site was shut down I was receiving around 100k visitors a month and earning around one thousand dollars monthly.  This was income which to maintain I had to do very little was sent in the mail or paid to my paypal sometimes multiple times monthly.  This paid my car off and my rehab bills which was around ten thousand.  Since I used a free server they shut my site down since I was taking far more bandwidth than allowed, but by the time it shut down I was completely debt free and had no real need to rebuild the business.

These are just a couple of examples of what can be accomplished if one believes in himself.  There are more I could put her, but the point of this post is to foster a belief in what is possible.  Remove the thoughts which hold you back and foster the dreams you have attempting them frequently and never giving up.

Choose A Hobby That Will Help You Grow

There are thousands of different activities to choose from, but few will you find enjoyment and growth.  The hobbies you try should compliment your educational, spiritual, and physical goals.  If for example your main goal is getting in shape then picking up a gaming or similar hobby will actually distract you from reaching the goal.  It would be better to explore options of outside hobbies such as walking, fishing, or flying those plastic planes.  If you live in a very cold area like myself you may need to find an indoor hobby which requires exercise.

Some of the different hobbies may not seem beneficial, but they help with what you are trying to accomplish.  In previous posts I have spoken about being a gamer.  To many this seems like a waste even more so than watching TV, but what people don’t see is the amount of logical thinking and motor control skills that are done.  If you game online there is also a social effect unseen by those who do not participate.  Online gaming made me much more confident in school and helped me perform better as well.  There are of course others, but the only hobby I am also versed in is reading classical literature which has helped my English immensely.

Other hobbies which I have seen beneficial effects are of course those with an athletic need.  In our world we as a species have moved away from all athletics.  The only time one is expected to run is by choice or in a physical education class.  Simply walking is usually not even needed.  The majority of jobs require you to be at a desk or standing still.  Most jobs which in previous years required athletic activity has replaced man power with machine power.  This leads to a need to have at least one recreational activity be physically active since our bodies still need it.

The final point I would like to talk about is the need to have hobbies which are enjoyable, but also increase intellect.  The only place being bright is usually middle and high school.  What is interesting is the first day after graduation when it is time to apply to college or go work these children quickly learn the importance of intellect.  When applying to a job not having a diploma because you felt it unnecessary will be detrimental to your salary and position.  The same goes with respect from the people you meet.  If you are able to speak correctly without mistakes and are knowledgeable on academic topics then people you meet will give you more respect and will be more likely to offer you jobs, promotions, raises, ect…

I am wanting to write a few posts about the book I am reading.  It is the original Grim’s Fairy Tales.  I would like to compare and contrast some of my favorite Disney TV shows such as Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.  Expect those coming soon.

Creating an Education Program

I work at a company who assists the daily living tasks of mentally and physically ill persons. In the last year I was tasked with creating an education program for all individuals who were interested. The program was an amazing success with nearly all person interested who were asked. The shock still has not worn off. People who had been so torn away from reality because of their illness asked to attend. With the success I only hit a few snags along the way and those are what I would like to talk about in this post.

The first issue I had was with my own limitations. I am a college graduate, but having gone to school in previous years I had not really brushed up on the basics or foundations of academic knowledge. Math was the most common source of academic need so my class first focused on the foundations of mathematics. The first week was when I began testing to find where each person was. For the most part they all were at the same place. They had the basic understanding of arithmetic, but lacked the memorization of times tables and other operations that the majority of us take for granted.

There were a few exception and allowed me to also begin teaching higher math mainly algebra. We are opening the door on statistics and geometry though covering it fully is out of the question. I find myself even with the more advanced students covering the foundations over and over ensuring the education foundation is fixed.

Math may be the subject which I cover most, but I find English much more enjoyable. One week I brought into work some poetry from Dickinson, Poe, and Frost. Unlike a more common classroom where students fear reading aloud the people I work with all read aloud. This amazed me. I believed they would be much less likely to speak in public. Personally it took me a long time to gain the courage to simply stand up and begin public speaking, but these guys even though they would struggle on some parts of the poetry were more than willing to stand up and at least attempt reading the poem aloud.

Finding Inspiration

Any form of expression must have a preceding inspiration.  When sitting down to write, play, or do any form of creative expression to make the most out of your time it is good to have a goal already set.  Knowing what you want to accomplish will expedite and improve the creative process.  The goal should be something you feel passionately about.  If you can create enough motivation any set backs you find during creation should seem minimal.  This is much easier said than done.  You must first know what makes you excited.  Once you have an idea what inspires you then implementing it into your life will be easier.  My personal inspiration comes from classic writers.  The ideas which spurred books hundreds of years ago amaze me and push me to write.  I also find watching instrumentalists on youtube.

When you begin your search for inspiration make sure to not get sucked up in poor substitutes.  With me this seems to happen when I play games.  It is true games are an immense source of creativity.  In some cases they even blow books out of the water.  The ones I speak of would be the Bethesda game titles.  These the company spend years on creating the stories making sure they are extremely rich.  Even though this is the case I find myself with a lack of ideas after playing games.  I believe the most important aspect which they give me is stress relief rather than inspiration.  Books on the other hand once finished I find myself going back over the main story line and contrasting my world view to the authors.  This I believe is why books always seem to inspire more in me than other forms of ideas I take in.

Another important aspect when looking for information is never to waste.  You should kindle your inspiration.  If you become inspired and let that flame out it may not arise again and you could possibly lose the creation that could have been.  It is important for you to keep space to create.  This should be set up in a place with very little stimulation outside of helpful inspiration.  What I mean by this is if you find music helpful when creating then have music in your space, but try to keep out any other distraction including people which may make your work suffer.

Once you have the space separated from your normal quarters and those living with you know not to bother you when your creating it will become far easier allow for creative creations. Thank you for reading and if you enjoyed be sure to subscribe.

Thoughts On The Paris Attacks

A terrible tragedy recently occurred in Paris.  Over 100 people dead in a very well orchestrated terrorist attack in Paris.  Nothing like this has been seen since 911.  I feel France did a very good job ensuring their outrage was fully expressed and declaring war on those who targeted their city.  I felt the call for tactical nuclear strikes may have been an overreach since a country did not commit the attacks, but rather a terrorist organization.  I am somewhat surprised at the arrogance of the terrorists.

I understand terrorists have a need to create fear.  They need enemies and reasons to go on living (or dying in the case of suicide bombers). After thinking a while on this I believe a lack of intellect would cause the human organism to fall for pretty much anything.  These people actually believe they accomplished something.  Perhaps they believe that starting war will help their cause which I am assuming is to drop everyone down to their level.

I understand that this thought process is completely one sided.  It is one thing to sit back 10,000 miles away and judge someone else’s actions.  If these people truly believe they need to kill themselves and others in the name of a cause there must be something to that cause.  Perhaps they have good reasons in their own mind.  I know I would die and kill in the name of freedom.  I wonder if they feel as though they believe their way of life is under attack.

Well I can’t be certain that this is the reason.  There really is no justification for their actions, but I believe it is worthwhile to at the very least find the reason they do what they do.  Just my thoughts and once again lets all give our hopes and prayers to France.
